Mai Murdmaa, is the chief choreographer and artistic director of the Estonian National Opera ballet troup, the major performing house in Estonia. She was born in Tallinn and in 1947 she began her studies at the Tallinn Choreography School which she finished in 1956. In the same year she became a dancer of the Estonia Theatre Ballet and performed at the VI World Youth and Students' Festival. From 1959 to 1964 she studied with Professor R. Zakharov at the faculty choreography of the Moscow State Theatre Institute. As a student, Mai Murdmaa produced her first production of importance - E. Tamberg's "Ballet-symphony" (1963). It was 1973 she has been the Chief Choreographer. Besides the home theatre Mai Murdmaa has staged ballets in many towns of the former Soviet Union and also in Europe and the USA. She has toured with the company and with her ballets in Bulgaria, Germany, Poland, Sweden, Italy and Finland. In the United States she has choreographer ballets for the Colorado Ballet, Indianapolis Ballet, and for Natasha Makarova. Among the International Artists she has worked with in addition to Makarova are Maya Plisetskaya, Michael Baryshnikov, and Cynthia Gregory. |
